We've heard that its not just the children that love Riverhill. So, by popular demand, we have introduced activities and events for 2012 for the 'grown-ups':


Pilates and Lattes

4 sessions in the Garden Room with Qualified Instructor, Tamzin Peacock, followed by coffee in the Riverhill Cafe. Max 10 per class.
Dates/times: 9:30am 18/4/12 (1.5hrs) and then 25/4/12, 2/5/12 and 9/5/12 (1 hr)

Tamzin qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1992, and has gained experience in all the major specialities, including musculoskeletal outpatients, orthopaedics, hydrotherapy, general surgery, intensive care and the stroke unit. Tamzin went on to train with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) to become a modified Pilates matwork instructor and teaches sought after classes locally as well as providing one to one Pilates sessions. Tamzin believes that with the combination of her extensive Physiotherapy background and Pilates training, a service can be provided that is the key to identification, evaluation and management of many musculoskeletal conditions.

Jo Appleby-Lom is an experienced artist, specialising in botanical illustration and calligraphy. Beautifully hand written descriptions so often accompany the illustration of botanical specimens.  Jo completed a degree course in calligraphy at Kensington Palace and enjoys the rhythm and discipline of writing daily with hand ground Japanese ink and a flat-ended fine nib.  Together with her assistant, Pic Hall, she will teach you the craft skills of botanical illustration and calligraphy. Riverhill is a perfect location with its gardens and botanical collection.

You will learn to observe and depict botanical subjects in a relaxed environment. We will introduce pencil work and mixed media i.e pencil and watercolour. There will be demonstrations and one to one teaching, a chance to explore reference material in the class and to make use of the beautiful gardens.
 
We will give you a head start in the techniques needed and will encourage you to express your own style.
 
Coffee, tea and home-made Riverhill biscuits will be provided

Entry requirements

No experience needed, just enthusiasm. Ages 18 and over.

What to bring

We will supply all materials needed for the course (included in the price) and will bring supplies for students to purchase should they wish to equip themselves at home.

You will learn some of the fundamental approaches and principles of Calligraphy starting with Italics. We will introduce you to pencil work and swiftly move on to pen and ink using gouache,japanese ink stick and suitable paper. Learning this traditional skill will not only improve your handwriting but open up new opportunities, as calligraphy can enhance anything that is written - through demonstration, one to one teaching and looking at books, and reference material we will help you to create beautiful letterforms.

Photography Treks

Our photography treks will be run by Sussex based professional photographer, Andrew Newson. Andrew has been a professional photographer for over 15 years and has a wealth of knowledge in many areas of photography. He started running photography courses in early 2009 and hasn't looked back since. Andrew's courses are varied and fun, and his passion for the artform is infectious. Andrew loves nothing more than seeing people get excited about making beautiful images.

Format of the phototrek:

10am
Meet at Riverhill Gardens cafe for coffee and registration
Talk from owner, Sarah Rogers, about the history of Riverhill

10.20am
Discussion with Andrew about the focus of the trek and relevant camera settings required

10.45am
Explore the gardens in groups and start taking photos based on the agreed themes
Andrew will also be on hand to advise and guide you with the projects

12.45pm
Group discussion around learnings from the trek.

1pm
Finish

You will be invited to upload your favourite photos from the trek on to our Facebook page. There will be a prize for the best!

Welly Fitness Walks

Get fit in the fresh air exploring the fabulous Kentish countryside. Guided walks lasting 1hour starting from Riverhill Gardens car park, exploring the wonderful neighbouring countryside, to finish at Riverhill Cafe Term-time Thursdays (during open season) - 9.15 am/ 2.30pm start (Well behaved dogs on leads welcome!) Not suitable for pushchairs or walking children. Young children to be carried in backpacks.
